DR Congo: 24 Presidential Candidates Announced for 2023 Elections

The Electoral Commission in the DRC (CENI) announced on this Friday, October 20, that 24 candidates have submitted their candidacy for the upcoming 2023 presidential elections. These candidates, including the incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi, will need to be approved by the Constitutional Court, and the final list of contenders will be published on November 18.

Prominent figures among the candidates include Nobel laureate and former Governor of Katanga, Moise Katumbi, as well as Martin Fayulu, who contested the 2018 elections and was widely perceived as the winner according to CENI.

One of the candidates is a woman, Marie Jose Ifoku Mputa.

Christian Moleka, a political expert in the DRC, has stated that President Tshisekedi, who is 60 years old, is seeking re-election and has the right to run for office again. Moleka also noted that it is likely that several candidates will challenge Tshisekedi in the upcoming elections.

The final list of candidates will be crucial in determining who will lead the DRC after the elections.
